The Next Installment

June 14, 2011 - Game Wire

Platforms: PS3/XBOX 360/PC

The next installment to the Call of Duty franchise and the Modern Warfare series has been announced. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, co-developed by Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer, is set to release November 8, 2011 in North America. It has been confirmed that Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer have co-developed the single campaign, while Raven Software worked on the multiplayer settings.

The story takes off immediatly after the ending of Modern Warfare 2, and players will see the return of beloved Task Force 141 Captain John “Soap” MacTavish, and the former SAS Captain John Price. The two are now on the run with MacTavish’s Russian informant, Nikolai, as fugitives after killing the rogue U.S. Army Lieutenant General Shepard. Again the game’s main antagonist will be Russian ultranationalist, Vladimir Makarov. New players such as Derek “Frost” Westbrook and “Sandman”, two Delta Force operatives deployed in New York; Marcus Burns, a Sergeant in the Special Air Service in London; and Yuri, a Russian federal security agent.

New offensive maps in the campaign will take place in America, England, Germany, and France. More stages are planned in Somalia, Moscow, Sierra Leone, and Dubai.

Gameplay of the new game was shown at E3 2011 by Robert Bowling and Glen Schofield.

L.A. Takes A Step Back In Time

May 11, 2011 - Game Wire

Platforms: PS3/XBOX 360

The new anticipated upcoming game, L.A. Noire, is set to release May 17, 2011 in the US. This new crime fighting game looks worthwhile. It’s being produced by a strong combination of Team Bondi in conjunction with Rockstar Games. Both developers are working on the game, and Rockstar Games is the publisher. L.A. Noire was officially announced on February 4, 2010.

The game is set in post-war Los Angeles during the 1940s. During this time, the city of Los Angeles was buzzing with glamor and fame. Whenever there is money and fame, there also comes a lot crime and corruption. The player’s character, Cole Phelp, joins the L.A.P.D. to write the wrongs of the city. Cole Phelp also served in World War II previous to the game. As You advance through the main story of the game, you earn ranks by completing missions and making arrests. The player can free roam or complete side missions by traveling on foot or by vehicle, just like Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise.

So far it looks like Rockstar Games and Team Bondi are going to pull off a real hit. I know L.A. Noire is one of many highly anticipated games of 2011, and I hope you all are thinking about purchasing the game when it’s released.

Activision Calls in the Cavalry

May 11, 2011 - Game Wire

Activison Blizzard, publisher of the Call of Duty and the World of Warcraft franchises, has apparently pulled in Sledgehammer Games, a Northern California company, to assist in the creation of Modern Warfare 3.

After the loss of Infinity Ward co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella, quite a few of IW’s top developers and writers left the company. Activision assigned Sledgehammer to work with Infinity Ward to develop the next Call of Duty installment.  Sources say that the two companies are equally sharing the development of the single player aspect of the game.

While Activision hasn’t officially announced the release of Modern Warfare 3, it is believed to be put on shelves in mid-November. This would follow the traditional Activision prompt of putting out a new Call of Duty annually. If my guess is correct, the game should be announced by E3 or in June/July of this year.

The multiplayer portion of the game is under a whole new management. In the past, Activision left both Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 to be solely developed by Infinity Ward. However, because of the unexpected turmoil, a Wisconsin-based studio, Raven Software, will be creating the new game’s multiplayer side. Will the multiplayer be different? It shouldn’t be. Most Call of Duty games revolve around the same style of gameplay, no matter who the developing studio is.

In 2009, Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling game of the year, and in 2010, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops was best seller. Will the new tag team match-up that Activision has put together produce a campaign as good as Modern Warfare 2’s? Sources say that Activison has invested over $200 million on a “new” development. I’m confident that this will be Modern Warfare 3, and I’m also looking forward to what it has in store.

Network Outage Continues

May 9, 2011 - Game Wire

As many of you know, the Playstation Network (PSN) has been down for 19 days and counting as of May 9, 2011. An “external intrusion” on April 19, 2011 caused Sony to shut down the network. On April 26, the public learned via Playstation Blog that network users’ credit card data and personal information may have been compromised in the intrusion. Again, on May 3rd, Sony Online Entertainment was attacked. This time, the intruders managed to get 12,700 credit card numbers and compromised 24.6 million accounts.

Now that Sony has been infiltrated twice, they are starting to lose trust from some 77 million customers across the globe. On April 30, 2011, an update on the Playstation Blog said that PSN hoped to have some services up and running within a week. The week passed by, and PSN failed to deliver. On May 5th, the current CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment apologized for all inconveniences caused by the outage. PSN also organized a “Welcome Back” program to make up for the outage. The program offers a free 30 day subscription of Playstation Plus, and 30 days free to Qriocity subscribers.

The lastest update on the Official Playstation Blog was on May 6, 2011, telling us that they have started testing the security of their newer more “complicated” system. It is now May 9th, and we have yet to have any Playstation Network.  In a supposed press conference by Sony, it was said, “full Playstation Network services may not be available until the end of the month.” That would mean that possible online gaming for the Playstation wouldn’t be available for quite a while longer. Could this be true? Although we cannot confirm this, it is a popular theory in the news.

Will PSN rise from the grave before the end of the month? Sony has already lost over two billion dollars according to stock rates. We will just have to wait and see if Sony can pull it off and make a quick recovery.

Red Faction: Armageddon “A New Threat” Trailer

Red Faction: Armageddon

May 9, 2011 - Game Wire

Platforms: PC/PS3/XBOX 360

This spring’s late release Red Faction: Armageddon looks like a good one. Set to arrive on shelves in the US on June 7, 2011, this latest installment of the Red Faction series is sure to revive the previous enjoyment of Red Faction: Guerrilla.

The player takes on the role of Darius Mason, grandson of Guerrilla hero, Alec Mason, is a down-and-dirty smuggler on the ravaged planet of Mars. In Guerrilla, Mars’ atmosphere was kept stable by the massive Terraformer, which regulated oxygen levels on the planet. When the Terraformer is destroyed, an ongoing series of cataclysmic events plague the red planet.

Humanity on Mars is forced to move underground to sustain itself. The colonists build habitable cave networks under Mars’ surface. When Darius and his crew uncover an abandoned Marauder shrine, and the tunnels behind it, they unleash Armageddon onto the planet. The planet is being ravaged, and only Darius and the Red Faction can help.
